Gvozdačke stene, Karst mountain peak in Western Serbia
Gvozdačke stene is a mountain massif with several peaks, its highest point at Svilena stena rising to about 1200 meters above the Drina River. The terrain consists of rolling meadows interspersed with steep rock faces that create varied topography across the range.
The mountain took its name from the nearby village of Gvozdac, with the term deriving from old words for dense oak forests that once covered the area. The region served as a transit route along the Drina River for centuries.
The northwestern cliffs serve as nesting grounds for griffon vultures, making this one of the few places in the region where these birds thrive. Visitors can observe these rare birds in their natural habitat.
The circular hiking route covers about 14 kilometers across multiple summits with moderate elevation changes. Sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential, as trails can be steep in sections.
From the summits, visitors can survey both the Podgorina region to the north and vast stretches of Bosnia to the south. On clear days, the view spans multiple valleys and river-carved landscapes.
