Pustinja, Serbian Orthodox monastery in Kolubara District, Serbia
Pustinja is a monastery complex located in a secluded valley near Pocuta village, surrounded by steep hills and dense forests along the Jablanica River canyon. The structure features an eight-sided dome above its central section and an unusual northern entrance.
The monastery was built on foundations from the 11th century, with the current structure completed in 1622. This completion occurred during a period when religious construction was limited under Turkish rule.
The walls inside are decorated with frescoes that show religious figures and Serbian saints in traditional styles. These painted images are part of what visitors see when they walk through the rooms.
To reach the monastery, take a bus to Pocuta village followed by a walk on a concrete path to the complex. The route is straightforward but involves hiking on established trails through the valley.
The monastery has an uncommon northern entrance and an eight-sided dome, features that differ from traditional Orthodox church design. These architectural choices set it apart from other religious buildings in the area.
