Gornje Žapsko monastery, Orthodox monastery in Vranje, Serbia
Gornje Žapsko monastery is an Orthodox religious complex centered on Saint Stephen Church, built with traditional Serbian architectural style. The structures sit at the outskirts of Vranje with a layout typical of monastic communities.
The monastery underwent major reconstructions during its past, with the most significant restoration completed in 1843 under Prince Miloš Obrenović. This rebuilding reflected efforts to restore Orthodox institutions across the region during that period.
The sisterhood maintains an icon painting workshop where traditional techniques continue to be practiced today. The monastery also plays a role in preserving and sharing Orthodox writings with Serbian-speaking readers.
The monastery is located outside the main town area and can be reached on foot or by local transport. Inside, visitors may find religious books and materials produced by the community available for purchase.
The sisterhood holds exclusive rights to translate the writings of Elder Paisios of Mount Athos into Serbian. This work connects the monastery to Saint John the Theologian Monastery in Greece through a collaborative translation effort.
