Magas, Capital city in Ingushetia, Russia
Magas is a capital city in the Republic of Ingushetia in the North Caucasus and occupies a compact urban area west of Nazran. The settlement borders several villages and sits on gently sloping terrain toward the river lowlands.
The founding took place in 1995 after the republic separated from the Chechen-Ingush region. In 2002 the town was declared the official seat of government and thus replaced Nazran.
The name of the city means sun city and recalls medieval trade routes through the Caucasus. Public squares feature ornamental arches that reference old mountain fortresses and now serve as meeting points.
A federal highway connects the town with neighboring regions and provides access to larger cities in the North Caucasus. Public buses operate during the day and make it easier to move within the city and to adjacent settlements.
A towering structure in the center combines regional tower traditions with modern building materials and reaches a height of around 100 meters (330 feet). The building serves as a landmark and references historical watchtowers in the mountains of the region.
