Kemerovo, Industrial city in Western Siberia, Russia
Kemerovo is an industrial city along the Tom River in Western Siberia and sits in the northern part of the Kuzbass coal basin. It spreads over both banks of the Tom and Iskitimka rivers at about 140 meters (460 feet) elevation.
The settlement appeared in 1701 as a village for coal workers and grew into an important center during the nineteenth century. Expansion accelerated in the twentieth century when heavy industry and mining developed rapidly.
Across the five districts, concert halls host performances that range from Cossack ensembles to mining songs that reflect the region's coal heritage. On weekends, residents fill theaters to watch both classical plays and events that celebrate Siberian traditions.
The city runs an extended bus network connecting all five districts, with tickets sold by drivers or at automated terminals. Visitors staying longer can find shops, supermarkets and banks both downtown and in outer neighborhoods.
Within the city limits, nine plant species and five animal species recorded in the Red Book of Kuzbass survive in parks or along riverbanks. Visitors can encounter protected vegetation and animals in a few quiet corners despite the industrial surroundings.
