Moscow State University, Research university in Ramenki District, Moscow, Russia.
Moscow State University is a public institution in the Ramenki District of Moscow, known for its work in natural sciences, humanities and technical fields. The central building with its tall tower is surrounded by several lower wings connected through long corridors that house numerous faculties, laboratories and lecture halls.
The institution was founded in 1755 by Empress Elizabeth and the scholar Mikhail Lomonosov, making it the first higher education establishment in Moscow. In the mid-20th century it moved to its current location on Sparrow Hills, where the new main building emerged as a monumental piece of Soviet architecture.
Students from all parts of Russia and beyond gather on the campus, often sitting in groups on the lawns or in courtyards to study together. The academic atmosphere also shows in the many bookshops, cafés and small libraries scattered across the grounds.
The campus sits on elevated ground with wide views over the city and is best reached by metro. Visitors can explore the outdoor areas, while access to indoor spaces is restricted and typically requires registration or permission.
The main building belongs to a group of seven high-rise structures built in Moscow after World War II, often called the Seven Sisters. The viewing platform at the base of the building offers one of the best panoramic views of the entire city and the surrounding forests.
