Zarechny, Nuclear technology center in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia
Zarechny is a settlement east of Yekaterinburg spread along the Pyshma River and surrounded by forests. It was developed specifically as a center for nuclear research and power generation, housing installations for large-scale scientific work.
The settlement started in 1955 as housing for nuclear power plant workers and gained official town status in 1992. Its rapid growth came from expanding nuclear research efforts during the Soviet period.
The town grew as a worker settlement for the nuclear facility and developed into a community where daily life centers on research and power production. Most residents work in the scientific installations, which shapes how the place functions differently from other Russian cities.
The settlement is a restricted area that visitors cannot enter freely and requires special permits. Information about access should be obtained through official channels since visiting is heavily regulated.
The settlement houses one of the few still-active sodium-cooled fast breeder reactors in the world. This technology is outdated in most countries but continues to operate here as a working system.
