Anapa

Anapa is a resort town on the Black Sea coast in southern Russia, where long sandy beaches stretch for several kilometers. The water stays shallow enough to stand in near the shore and warms quickly during the summer months.

The site once held the Greek colony of Gorgippia, established in the 4th century before Christ. Russia built a fortress here in 1781 and later developed the location into a port.

Along the shore, informal gatherings form around ball games and group picnics during the bathing season, with families arriving after sunset to enjoy the cooler hours. The shallow waters encourage communal bathing, where locals wade far out together, talking and watching children play.

Several health centers use local mineral springs and therapeutic mud for treatments available throughout the season. The best time to visit falls between June and September, when the water reaches comfortable bathing temperatures.

Over a distance of more than 40 kilometers (25 miles), fine sand sections alternate with pebble areas, without clear boundaries between the two types. In some spots, you can step from sand onto round stones within just a few meters while walking.
