Gorgippia

Gorgippia is an archaeological site in Anapa that lies beneath the modern city, revealing the remains of an ancient settlement. The excavations show paved streets, residential buildings, and urban structures that reflect daily life from more than 2000 years ago.

The city was founded in the 5th century BCE by Greek colonists and grew into a major trading port within the Bosporan Kingdom. Its development ended in the 3rd century CE when it was destroyed.

The necropolis displays stone coffins surrounded by circular formations that blend Greek burial customs with local traditions of the region. Walking through this area, you can see how two different worlds coexisted in their approach to honoring the dead.

An open-air museum allows visitors to examine preserved sections of the ancient settlement and explore the archaeological finds directly. The best time to visit is during warmer months when the walkways are dry and easy to navigate.

Excavations uncovered untouched sarcophagi filled with golden artifacts that reveal the wealth of some residents. A bronze statue was also found commemorating grain shipments to ancient Athens, showing how far this city's trade connections extended.
