Serov, Antelope species in East Asian mountains
Serow is a city within the Serow okrug in Sverdlovsk Oblast in the Ural Mountains. The city sits along the Kakwa River and features Soviet-era residential blocks alongside some older wooden houses.
The settlement emerged in the early 18th century as a mining village and received city status in 1939. During World War II, several factories were evacuated here from the west.
Local communities in mountainous regions of Asia regard serows as symbols of endurance, incorporating their images into traditional crafts and regional stories.
Visitors reach the city by train or bus from Yekaterinburg, which takes several hours. Winters are cold and long, while summers are short and mild.
The city was formerly named Nadezhdinsk until it was renamed in 1939 after the painter Valentin Serov. He never actually lived here or visited the area.
