German National District, National municipal district in Altai Krai, Russia.
The German National District is an administrative area in northwestern Altai Krai comprising several rural settlements with Halbstadt as its administrative center. The territory spreads across agricultural land and small villages connected by local roads.
The area was founded in 1927 as a settlement region for German-speaking people, but was closed in 1938 during Stalin's era. After 1991 the district was reestablished and has existed as an independent administrative area since then.
The communities here are home to descendants of German settlers who have kept their language and traditions alive to this day. You can notice this cultural heritage in everyday conversations, local customs, and the way people interact with one another.
The area is accessible via the main Pavlodar-Tomsk highway, which connects the various settlements together. When visiting, plan for rural conditions and allow time for travel between the villages.
In the 1990s the area received financial support from Germany for infrastructure projects that led to the construction of new residential buildings. This international partnership shaped the development of the communities considerably.
