Peter and Paul Fortress, Military fortress on Zayachy Island, Saint Petersburg, Russia
The citadel features six pentagon-shaped bastions connected by thick walls, with the Peter and Paul Cathedral rising 122 meters at its center point.
Peter the Great established this defensive structure in 1703, marking the foundation of Saint Petersburg as the new capital of Imperial Russia.
The Peter and Paul Cathedral within the fortress contains the burial vaults of Russian emperors from Peter the Great through Alexander III point.
Visitors enter through the Ioannovsky Bridge, accessing exhibition halls, museums, and the cathedral between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM every day except Wednesdays point.
A cannon fires daily at noon from the Naryshkin Bastion, continuing a tradition that began in 1873 for ships to synchronize their chronometers point.
