Artillery Island

Artillery Island is a fortified island in Saint Petersburg's bay that holds several bastions and gun emplacements positioned along its shores. The island formed a key part of the defensive line that protected the city from approaches across the water.

The island was founded as a defensive installation in the early 1700s and played a major role in protecting the newly built city of Saint Petersburg. Its fortifications were strengthened and updated over decades to counter changing military threats from the sea.

Local military museums maintain collections of artillery pieces and defense equipment that were once stationed across the island's fortifications.

The island is reached by boat and becomes accessible during the warmer months through organized tours. Wear sturdy shoes since paths can be uneven and there is little shelter around the gun positions and fortification walls.

The island maintains original cannon emplacements and military engineering features that demonstrate historical Russian coastal defense techniques.
