The 1988 fire at the Library of USSR Academy of Sciences consumed 298,000 books and damaged three million volumes through smoke and heat.
The incident started on February 14, 1988, at 8:13 pm in the newspaper section on the third floor and continued until the following afternoon.
The destruction included 152,000 volumes from the Baer Collection of foreign scientific works and 146,000 Russian scientific publications from past centuries.
Over 700 regional libraries contributed replacement materials, including books and rare editions, to restore portions of the damaged collection.
Local citizens responded to radio appeals by taking frozen water-damaged books to their homes for drying, helping save 93% of affected materials.
