Saint Petersburg Planetarium

The Saint Petersburg Planetarium is an observatory facility with multiple exhibition spaces and a large dome for sky projection. The building contains several star halls including one with a dome approximately 25 meters across, along with telescopes for direct observation.

The facility opened in 1959 as the third planetarium in the Soviet Union at that time. The building itself dates to 1900 when it originally served as a public assembly house before being converted into an astronomical venue.

The building's name reflects its earlier purpose as a public gathering and cultural center for the city. Today visitors experience the wonder of space study in spaces that still carry traces of that communal heritage.

The facility sits close to Gorkovskaya Metro station making it straightforward to access via public transport. Plan to spend several hours exploring the multiple halls and exhibitions since there is much to see throughout the building.

A mobile version of the planetarium travels to different neighborhoods bringing astronomical education directly to residents. This traveling setup allows people throughout the city to engage with sky science outside the main building.
