Sokol, Metro station on Zamoskvoretskaya Line in Moscow, Russia
Sokol is an underground metro station on Moscow's Zamoskvoretskaya Line serving as an architectural landmark. White marble pillars support an arched ceiling adorned with gray Koyelga marble, onyx, and white ceramic tiles.
The station opened on September 11, 1938, initially serving as the northwestern terminus of the Zamoskvoretskaya Line. It lost this role in 1964 when extensions were built further north.
The station takes its name from a cooperative settlement established in the 1920s, which shaped the identity of the surrounding district. This naming reflects how early Soviet communities influenced the urban landscape of Moscow.
Two main entrances from Leningradsky Prospekt provide direct access, with an additional entrance connecting to the Metro Market shopping center available since 2003. Visitors can choose different routes depending on where they need to go.
A tunnel section between this station and Voykovskaya experienced a collapse in March 2006 during construction work above ground. This incident marked a critical moment in Moscow's metro system history.
