Novaya Opera Theatre, Opera house in central Moscow, Russia
Novaya Opera Theatre is an opera house on Karetny Ryad Street featuring Art Nouveau design on its exterior. The building holds 660 seats and sits within the Hermitage Garden area of Moscow.
The theater was founded in 1991, initiated by conductor Evgeny Kolobov and Mayor Yury Luzhkov. It carried Kolobov's name from 2006 onward and became a fixture of Moscow's opera scene.
The house presents works from Russia and the West, from Wagner to Mussorgsky, drawing audiences into its hall. Performances combine traditional opera art with modern staging ideas, bringing classical works to life for today's visitors.
Performances run Tuesday through Sunday, and it helps to check the schedule ahead of time. Entry is via Karetny Ryad Street, and arriving with time to spare lets you take in the Art Nouveau interior.
The theater shapes its program through special formats that create evenings devoted to great composers with orchestra accompaniment. This blend of opera performances and symphonic concerts makes each season distinctive.
