Sovetsk, Administrative center in Kirov Oblast, Russia
Sovetsk is a town in Kirov Oblast where the Pijma and Viatka rivers meet. The urban area covers roughly 27 square kilometers and is home to around 16,500 people living along these two waterways.
The settlement began in 1594 as Russian forces expanded into Mari territories and was originally called Kukarka. The name changed in 1918 to mark the shift to Soviet rule.
The town's name reflects its Soviet past, visible in street names and architecture throughout the center. Local traditions show influences from Mari culture, which has shaped the region for centuries.
The best time to visit is between May and September when the weather is milder and the rivers are open for boat travel. The city center is easy to explore on foot, and the riverside location offers pleasant walking paths.
Vyacheslav Molotov, a top Soviet official under Stalin, was born here when it was still called Kukarka. His connection to the town is an overlooked part of local history that visitors rarely hear about.
