Uray, Oil industrial center in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Russia
Uray is a town in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, western Siberia, that spreads across an area with oil facilities and residential neighborhoods. The layout follows the pattern of an industrial town, where wide streets connect different zones.
The settlement was founded in January 1922 and grew slowly until large oil deposits were discovered in the area. Extraction began in the 1960s and transformed the place into an industrial town.
The name Uray comes from the Khanty-Mansi language and means "swamp forest," referring to the wetlands that surround the town. The community maintains a mix of Russian and indigenous customs, with traditional gatherings and seasonal festivals taking place throughout the year.
Winter temperatures often drop to minus 40 degrees Celsius, so warm clothing and proper preparation are essential for visits between November and March. In summer, temperatures can reach plus 30 degrees Celsius, making light clothing and sun protection advisable.
The town sits at an elevation of 55 meters (180 feet) above sea level and is surrounded by extensive swamp forests that remain difficult to access year-round. Some oil pumps stand directly next to residential buildings and are a familiar sight in the townscape.
