Atlasov Island, Volcanic island in Sea of Okhotsk, Russia.
The northernmost stratovolcano of the Kuril Islands rises 2,339 meters from the waters, forming a nearly symmetrical cone visible from great distances.
Vladimir Atlasov, a Russian explorer who incorporated Kamchatka Peninsula into Russia in the 17th century, gave his name to this remote island.
The Kuril Ainu people maintained that neighboring mountains exiled the volcano to the sea, explaining its current isolated position.
The subarctic climate brings heavy snowfall and strong winds to the island, making access possible only through specialized vessels during favorable conditions.
The island contains multiple pyroclastic cones on its northwest and southeast flanks, with the most recent volcanic activity recorded in 2022.
