Chikurachki

Chikurachki is an active stratovolcano located on Paramushir Island in the remote Severo-Kurilsky District, rising to approximately 1,800 meters. Its upper slopes are covered with distinctive reddish oxidized andesitic scoria, creating a striking visual contrast with the surrounding landscape.

This basaltic volcano has experienced multiple eruptions throughout recorded history, with the most recent significant activity occurring in July 2016. The ongoing activity demonstrates its continued role as a geologically dynamic feature of the Kuril Islands.

The name Chikurachki comes from the indigenous languages of the Kuril Islands, reflecting the deep ties between local communities and their volcanic surroundings. This linguistic heritage remains visible in place names throughout the region today.

Reaching this volcano requires extensive preparation and special permits because of its remote location in the Russian Far East. Visitors should expect harsh weather conditions, challenging terrain, and very limited infrastructure in the surrounding area.

Lava flows from this volcano have extended into the sea, creating new coastal formations along Paramushir Island's northwest shore. These features show how volcanic activity continues to reshape the island's geography today.
