Propsteikirche

The Propsteikirche is a Baroque provost church in Sackheim, Königsberg, distinguished by ornate architectural details throughout its interior spaces. Its design features elaborate ceilings and decorative patterns typical of seventeenth-century religious buildings in Eastern Europe.

The building was first constructed in 1616 and served its community for well over a century. Following a major fire, it was comprehensively rebuilt between 1765 and 1776 under architect Johann Samuel Lilienthal's direction.

The church served as a place where different Christian communities gathered together, reflecting the religious diversity that existed within the city. This openness to various faiths shaped how the building was used and understood by the people living there.

The church is located in Sackheim, a neighborhood of Königsberg that is now part of modern Kaliningrad. Its historical position can be identified through specific coordinates, though the surrounding urban landscape has transformed considerably over time.

In 1810, the church hosted a memorial service for Queen Louise where poet Max von Schenkendorf took a prominent role in the proceedings. The music for this significant gathering came from composer Johann Friedrich Reichardt.
