Eliseyev Emporium, Art Nouveau emporium in Tsentralny District, Russia
The Eliseyev Emporium is an Art Nouveau retail building in Tsentralny District featuring a metal frame structure with grand window facades. Its walls display glass decorations, bronze ornaments, and sculptural works by Estonian artist Amandus Adamson throughout the exterior.
This commercial building opened in 1903 after merchant Grigoriy Eliseyev commissioned architect Gavriil Baranovskiy to design it at the corner of Nevsky Prospekt and Malaya Sadovaya. The structure reflected the city's ambition to showcase grand trading establishments during the early modern period.
The ground floor displays three retail halls with glass and bronze details that reflect how wealthy shoppers expected to experience commerce in the early 1900s. The upper floor housed a restaurant and theater, making this building a gathering place for the city's elite.
The building is easily reached from Gostiny Dvor Metro Station and offers a selection of international delicacies, pastries, meats, wines, and cheeses. Plan your visit when you have time to explore the shops and dining areas at a comfortable pace.
After extensive renovations in 2012, the original interior elements from 1903 were preserved, including gilded stucco ceilings and period equipment. This careful restoration reveals how the historic shopping experience was brought back to life through attention to architectural detail.
