Shuvalov palace, Baroque palace in Tsentralny District, Saint Petersburg, Russia
Shuvalov Palace is a three-story building at the intersection of Italian Street and Malaya Sadovaya Street featuring Elizabethan Baroque elements on its exterior. The Museum of Hygiene now operates inside, presenting exhibitions about human anatomy and physiology through scientific collections and educational displays.
The building was constructed between 1753 and 1755 by architect Savva Chevakinsky for Count Ivan Shuvalov. Following the Russian Revolution, it served various governmental institutions before transitioning to its present educational and cultural use.
The palace served as a major center for art education and artistic training for generations of students. Visitors today can sense how this building shaped the development of the visual arts in the city.
The palace is easily accessible on foot from central Saint Petersburg and sits in an area with several other cultural institutions. Check beforehand which rooms are open during your visit, as some areas may close periodically for maintenance work.
The original grounds of the property once stretched from Millionnaya Street to Nevsky Prospect with a colonnade and central pavilion. These expansive gardens gave the structure a very different character than it has today.
