Kaliningrad Zoo, Zoo and botanical park in Kaliningrad, Russia
Kaliningrad Zoo is a zoological and botanical park in the western part of Kaliningrad that houses more than 2,800 animals from around 270 species across an area exceeding 16 hectares. Paths wind through old tree-lined avenues and between enclosures for carnivores, ungulates, birds, and primates.
The institution was founded in 1896 as Königsberg Zoological Garden by Professor Maximilian Braun and became known in the late 19th century for breeding exotic animals. After World War Two it was reopened under Soviet administration.
The grounds retain old trees from before World War Two, including rare species that can be observed alongside the animals. Many buildings date from the founding period and give the site a historic character.
Tickets can be purchased online in advance to avoid waiting at the entrance. The site is large, so comfortable shoes help during the longer walk through the enclosures.
A ginkgo biloba tree on the grounds is among the oldest living plant species and survived from the time of dinosaurs. The tree is one of the botanical features displayed alongside the animals.
