Kuntsevo Cemetery, Cemetery in Mozhaysky District, Moscow, Russia
Kuntsevo Cemetery is a burial ground in Mozhaysky District in western Moscow, stretching along the Setun riverbank south of Mozhaisk Highway. The site contains old gravestones, trees, and wide pathways that spread over a large area.
The cemetery was established in the 17th century and initially served as a burial place for the surrounding village population. During World War II, a mass grave for fallen Soviet soldiers was created, which now serves as a memorial site.
The name Kuntsevo comes from a village that was later absorbed into the city, and locals have used these grounds for burials for centuries. The five-domed church from the late 17th century still serves as a landmark and is visited by people stopping for quiet prayer.
Access is through several entrances, and the main pathways are wide enough for easy walking even in rainy weather. Most graves are scattered throughout, so it helps to know the approximate location of the burial you are looking for before your visit.
Several well-known figures rest here, including Soviet politician Georgy Malenkov, British spy Kim Philby, and Russian filmmaker Leonid Gaidai. Their graves are located in different parts of the grounds and are marked by simple memorial stones.
