Smolensky Metro Bridge, Metal arch bridge in Dorogomilovo District, Russia
The Smolensky Metro Bridge is a steel arch structure that carries two metro rail lines across the Moskva River between two district areas. The design uses large supporting pillars and spans multiple sections to cross the water.
This was Moscow's first metro bridge to cross the river and opened in 1937 as part of the city's early transport expansion. It marked a turning point because no metro line had crossed the water before.
The bridge takes its name from the Smolensky Monastery that once stood nearby and gave the area its identity. Today this name connects visitors to the place's past before the metro transformed it.
You can only cross this bridge by metro train since it was built exclusively for that purpose. The structure is best viewed from the riverbanks or nearby pedestrian areas along the shore.
The bridge rests on two enormous caissons driven deep into the river bottom to create a stable foundation. This underwater construction method was a bold innovation for Moscow at that time.
