Botanic Garden of the Irkutsk State University, Botanical garden and protected area in Irkutsk, Russia.
The Botanic Garden of Irkutsk State University is a research botanical garden in Irkutsk, Russia, with collections of Siberian and international plant species spread across outdoor beds and heated greenhouses. The grounds are divided into themed planting sections connected by paths, while indoor spaces recreate specific growing conditions for plants that cannot survive the Siberian winters outside.
The garden was founded in 1940 as part of the university's scientific program, making it one of the earliest organized botanical research spaces in eastern Siberia. Over the following decades, its collections grew steadily and its role in studying and protecting regional plant life became more central.
The garden is a working space where university students and researchers can be seen studying and cataloging plants from across Siberia on any given day. Walking through the paths feels more like entering a field laboratory than a public park.
The outdoor sections and the greenhouses can be visited separately, so a visit is worthwhile in any season. Sturdy footwear is a good idea since the outdoor paths can be wet or uneven depending on the time of year.
Part of the collection focuses on plants native to the Lake Baikal shoreline, some of which are very hard to find in cultivation anywhere else. A few of these grow inside the greenhouses because they cannot handle frost even by local standards.
