Perm-36, Gulag museum in Kuchino village, Russia
Perm-36 is a museum housed inside the grounds of a former Soviet forced labor camp, located near the village of Kuchino in Chusovskoy District, Russia. The site includes barracks, guard towers, workshops, and solitary confinement cells that remain in their original condition from the camp's operating years.
The camp was established in 1946 and later served as a facility for political prisoners who protested against the regime or were persecuted as dissidents starting in 1972. It remained active until 1987 and was later opened as a museum to remember the history of repression.
The museum exhibitions document daily life in the camps through artifacts, photographs, and personal accounts of former prisoners during the Soviet era.
The museum is located around 62 miles (100 kilometers) northeast of Perm and is best reached by car or organized transport. Guided tours are available in several languages, and digital archives are maintained for research purposes.
The grounds still contain wooden barracks, barbed wire fences, and tools used by prisoners, giving insight into daily work conditions. The solitary confinement cells are especially small and allow visitors to understand the harshness of punishment.
