Kulikovo Field, Medieval battlefield in Tula Oblast, Russia
Kulikovo Field sits in a wide plain between the Nepryadva, Krasivaya Mecha, and Don rivers, roughly 140 kilometers south of Tula. The site includes a museum, several monuments, and open ground that spreads across low hills.
On September 8, 1380, Prince Dmitry Donskoy led his forces to defeat the Golden Horde army under Mamai on this ground. The victory is remembered as the first unified Russian military success against Mongol rule.
The name honors Prince Dmitry, who earned his title Donskoy after the battle fought here. Today the site serves as a memorial where visitors walk among monuments and see the open terrain where the armies once met.
Access is via Kulikovo Pole railway station, from which paths lead to the different monuments scattered across the site. Guided visits help with orientation across the open terrain and through the museum exhibits.
Despite records describing heavy losses during the battle, no mass burial sites or large collections of remains have been found on the field. Archaeologists suggest the fallen may have been buried elsewhere or that soil conditions did not preserve the bones.
