Myrmekion, Archaeological site in Kerch, Russia

Myrmekion is an excavated settlement on Cape Karantinny with remains of defensive walls, homes, and ancient wine production facilities spread across the site. The ruins reveal how people lived and worked in this Greek colony long ago.

Greek colonists founded this settlement in the mid-6th century BCE and it grew into an important city in the Bosporan Kingdom. It remained active for a thousand years before gradually declining and being abandoned.

The sanctuary dedicated to Demeter reveals which goddess locals honored and why her worship mattered to them. Religious rituals shaped daily life here, and the objects left behind show how people connected with their beliefs.

The site is accessible from April through October with guided tours available in multiple languages. Bring comfortable shoes and allow time to walk among the scattered ruins spread across the area.

A cache of 30 gold coins from the era of Alexander the Great was uncovered here, representing one of the largest discoveries from the Bosporan Kingdom. Such finds reveal the trade routes and economic importance this ancient place held.
