Usman, Protected river system in Lipetsk Oblast and Voronezh Oblast, Russia.
The Usman is a river in the Lipetsk and Voronezh oblasts of Russia, flowing as a tributary into the Voronezh River. It runs through a mix of forest and open meadow, and together with the woodland along its banks it forms a designated protected area.
Settlements appeared along the river during the early modern period, when people used the floodplains for farming and fishing. In the 17th century, defensive lines were built across this region to guard the southern frontier of the Russian state.
The river gives its name to the Usman Forest, a large woodland reserve that stretches along both banks and shapes the identity of the surrounding area. People from nearby towns come here to walk, fish, and spend time outdoors, treating the river as a natural boundary between the settled and the wild.
The area is best explored on foot, and most paths along the river are accessible without special gear. Late spring through early autumn offers the most comfortable conditions, as the ground stays dry and the woodland is fully open.
The Usman is one of the few rivers in central Russia where the surrounding woodland has stayed intact enough to serve as a reference site for scientific studies on forest ecosystems. This makes the corridor a draw for researchers and naturalists who come specifically to record plants and animals found in few other places nearby.
