Варзугский заказник, aire protégée de Russie
Varzugskii Nature Reserve is a protected area in the Murmansk region that covers forests, rivers, lakes, and wetlands across a large territory. The reserve includes waterways such as the Varzuga River and is home to more than 380 species of vascular plants, along with rare animals like lynx, wolverine, and protected fish species.
The reserve was established to protect natural resources and rare species in this northern region during a period when environmental conservation became a priority in Russia. Its creation reflects a shift in understanding the need to safeguard wild habitats from human activities.
The reserve holds meaning for local communities who practice traditional fishing and berry gathering in permitted areas. These activities connect residents to the landscape and reflect a way of life built around respecting natural cycles and seasons.
Visitors need special permission to access the reserve, and a fee may apply to manage visits and protect the area. Certain activities such as boating on the Varzuga River are restricted during spawning season from mid-July through winter to prevent disturbance to fish and aquatic life.
The reserve is home to the European pearl mussel in its waters, a rare mollusk that is now seldom found and serves as an indicator of river health and water quality. This fragile creature's presence demonstrates how critical it is to maintain clean waterways for the entire ecosystem.
