Galichya Gora, Nature reserve in Lipetsk Oblast, Russia
Galichya Gora is a protected nature area in Lipetsk Oblast that spreads across six separate plots along the Don River and its smaller waterways. The total area covers 234 hectares and includes limestone formations, steep slopes, and meadows that shelter rare plant species.
The designation happened in 1925 to protect plants from limestone quarrying that threatened their habitats. Additional plots were later added to safeguard a wider range of habitats.
The site takes its name from limestone cliffs that rise along the water, and students often come here to observe plant assemblages that have adapted to these conditions. Visitors can see how local hikers use the trails to explore the river valleys, while researchers work in nearby stations studying ecological patterns.
Access to individual sites often involves unpaved paths, so sturdy footwear is advisable. Visitors should be prepared for steep climbs if they wish to view the rock faces up close.
More than 700 plant species grow here, including alpine plants normally found at much higher elevations in the Alps or the Caucasus. These species have adapted to the limestone cliffs at low altitude, creating unusual botanical combinations.
