Porokhovshchikov House
Porokhovshchikov House, Wooden landmark in Arbat District, Moscow, Russia
The Porokhovshchikov House is a two-story wooden mansion with Russian Revival style, featuring hand-carved window frames, cornices, and ornamental details created by craftsman I.A. Kolpakov in 1872. Following comprehensive restoration in 2004, the historic structure now operates as a club space with six private apartments while preserving its original architectural character.
The residence was built for businessman Alexander Porokhovshchikov, owner of the prestigious Slavyansky Bazaar hotel and restaurant, and won recognition at the 1873 Vienna World Exhibition. Its construction reflected the rise of successful Moscow entrepreneurs during the late 1800s.
The house served as a gathering place for Moscow's thinking people, housing a women's school and library where education and ideas were shared. The rooms still carry the feeling of intellectual life that once filled these spaces.
The building sits along the streets of the Arbat District and its wooden facade is clearly visible from outside. Since it now contains private apartments and a club space, you may want to check in advance about viewing opportunities inside.
The house witnessed personal sorrows when actor Alexander Porokhovshchikov and his wife Irina passed away within its walls. These human moments remain part of the building's hidden story beneath its ornamental wooden exterior.
