Komandorsky Zapovednik, Nature reserve in Kamchatka Krai, Russia

The Komandorsky Reserve encompasses four major islands and over 60 small islets, forming part of the extensive underwater volcanic ridge from Alaska to Kamchatka.

The Russian government established the Komandorsky Nature Reserve on April 23, 1993, naming it after naturalist Sergei Marakov in 2010.

The Commander Islands contain significant traces of Aleut settlements, who maintained traditional practices of marine resource management through generations.

Access to the reserve requires official permits, and visitors should plan their trips considering the frequent changes in weather patterns.

The reserve serves as the sole location in Russia for year-round whale observation, documenting 21 species that represent 25% of the global whale population.
