Memorial to Marshal Zhukov, Bronze memorial statue at Manezhnaya Square, Moscow, Russia
The Marshal Zhukov Memorial is a bronze equestrian statue on a granite base at Manezhnaya Square in Moscow, Russia. The figure shows the marshal in full military uniform with many medals, while his horse appears to trample military symbols beneath its front hooves.
The statue was unveiled on the fiftieth anniversary of the war's end in nineteen ninety-five and commemorates Zhukov's role in defeating German forces. It stands at a location that became a central site for national celebrations after the war.
The sculpture symbolizes Russian military strength through its representation of Marshal Zhukov, who led Soviet forces during critical battles of World War II.
The memorial stands directly opposite the entrance to the Historical Museum and can be reached in a few steps from Red Square. Visitors who wish to examine the inscriptions and reliefs on the base can do so from the pavement without admission or booking.
The positioning of the horse's hooves follows an old tradition: one raised front hoof suggests the person depicted was wounded in battle. The work by sculptor Vyacheslav Klykov weighs around twenty tons and was delivered in separate pieces.
