Museum of Archaeology of Moscow

The Museum of Archaeology of Moscow sits seven meters below street level and displays finds from different time periods. The objects come from digs conducted several decades ago at this location.

The museum opened in 1997 after intensive digs between 1993 and 1996 at the square. The work uncovered layers and structures spanning more than a thousand years of history.

The museum displays objects from different periods that were found during digs beneath the current square. The collection tells the story of people who lived and built in this spot across thousands of years.

Access is down a stairway beneath the square, and the underground space is straightforward to navigate. Visitors should expect somewhat longer waits or passage times when multiple groups are present at the same time.

The building was constructed directly around the remaining foundations of a bridge from the 1600s. These stone remnants still stand in the museum and tell the story of a river that was eventually channeled underground beneath the city.
