Ново-Никольские ворота, Medieval fortification gate in Moscow, Russia
The Novo-Nikolskie Gate is a passage through the Kitai-gorod wall featuring three distinct openings: two on the interior side and one on the exterior. The structure was designed as a defensive installation and formed a key part of the city's medieval fortification system.
The gate was built between 1535 and 1538 by architect Petrok Maly Fryazin as part of Moscow's defensive fortifications. Its construction occurred during a period of intensive city fortification under the Grand Prince's rule.
The gate received its name to distinguish it from an older gate nearby that served the same defensive purpose. This entrance point held symbolic importance as one of the main passages into the medieval city center for residents and travelers alike.
The gate originally connected to a bridge that crossed a water-filled moat, serving as a key strategic entry point to the medieval city center. Visitors can walk through the passage today and observe the structural design of this historic fortification.
During restoration work in the 1920s, two additional passages were added on both sides of the main gate structure. These modifications enhanced access to the area while adapting the original medieval design to modern needs.
