State Historical Museum, History museum in Red Square, Russia
The State Historical Museum is a history museum on Red Square in Moscow, Russia. The exhibition spreads across forty halls inside a red brick building and shows objects, documents, and artworks from all phases of Russian history.
Construction took place between 1875 and 1881, with historians Sergey Solovyov and Vasily Klyuchevsky guiding the planning. The opening followed a few years later, making the collection accessible to the public.
The building serves as a place where visitors can follow the development of life in Russia from ancient times to the present day. Inside, each hall organizes objects by period, showing how people lived, worked, and shaped their communities across the centuries.
The entrance sits directly on Red Square, so visitors can reach it easily from the center of the plaza. Plan several hours for a full tour through all the halls, as the collections are very extensive.
Inside, decorations in Russian Revival style were created by artists such as Viktor Vasnetsov and Ivan Aivazovsky. These ornaments were covered during the Soviet era and are now visible again.
