Monument to the Heroes of the North Sea fallen during the Great Patriotic War

The Monument to the Heroes of the North Sea is a granite obelisk that rises 42.5 meters above Murmansk and features an eternal flame on its black stone base. The structure is defined by a triangular pyramid design that represents a flag at half-mast.

The memorial was unveiled on October 13, 1974, and honors the Northern Fleet sailors who died defending Murmansk during World War II. It refers to the Arctic campaigns and the city's role as a key defensive post on the Soviet northern frontier.

The memorial contains two capsules holding seawater from a sunken patrol vessel and soil from key Arctic battle sites. These hidden reliquaries connect the monument directly to the waters and lands where the fighting took place.
