The settlement stretches along the Volga River at an elevation of 70 meters, featuring extensive meadow areas known as Artyomovsky meadows.

The settlement became part of the Nizhny Novgorod Urban Okrug during the municipal reforms of 2004, changing its administrative status and governance structure.

Russian inventor Ivan Petrovich Kulibin, who created numerous mechanical devices and improvements in watchmaking, was born in this settlement in 1735.

The settlement connects to the city through the Rowing Canal embankment, with public transportation serving the Sloboda Podnovye stop.

The territory contains one of the last remaining sections of natural Volga floodplain, preserving original riverside ecosystems.
