Rdeyskiy monastery, Orthodox monastery in Kholmsky District, Russia.
Rdeyskiy monastery is an Orthodox monastery in the Kholmsky District of the Novgorod region, set on the shore of Lake Rdeyskoye in the middle of a vast forest. The complex includes several stone buildings, among them a cathedral, and is surrounded by boggy terrain that separates it from the nearest village.
The monastery was founded in the 17th century and grew over the following centuries into a well-known religious center in the Novgorod region. Soviet authorities shut it down in the 1930s, and the buildings were left without religious use for many decades after that.
The Uspenskiy Cathedral at the heart of the complex still holds an old iconostasis with Orthodox religious images that survived years of abandonment. Walking through the building gives a sense of how religious life once looked in this remote part of northwestern Russia.
The monastery is not reachable by regular road, and the final stretch crosses boggy forest terrain that requires sturdy footwear and careful preparation. A visit works best in the summer months, when the ground is firmer and the days are longer.
Despite decades of abandonment, the stone buildings still stand largely upright, which is rare in such a wet and remote setting. The location inside a swamp area has kept the site away from human interference, leaving it in an untouched, if weathered, state.
