Rdeysky Nature Reserve, Protected wetland reserve in Novgorod Oblast, Russia
Rdeysky Nature Reserve is a zapovednik in Novgorod Oblast, Russia, made up of raised bogs, conifer forests, and marshland. The ground is mostly peat, crossed by natural water channels, which makes the terrain wet and difficult to walk through for most of the year.
Before World War II, people lived and worked in the area, cutting timber from the forested islands within the swamp. After the war, the territory was placed under strict protection and declared a zapovednik, ending all human activity there.
The reserve serves as a space where nature follows its own cycles, with seasonal bird movements shaping the character of the landscape. This protected status ensures that the rhythm of the ecosystem remains driven by natural patterns rather than human needs.
Much of the ground is wet and boggy year-round, so waterproof boots and appropriate clothing are necessary before entering the reserve. Summer offers the driest conditions and the best chance of moving through the terrain without difficulty.
The reserve is home to one of Europe's largest breeding populations of Eurasian curlews, wading birds with a long curved bill that nest in open bogland. Their calls carry far across the flat wetland in summer, making them easy to hear even when they are hard to spot.
