Ramenki, Metro station in Western Administrative Okrug, Russia
Ramenki is a metro station on the Kalininsko-Solntsevskaya Line in the western part of Moscow, sitting at considerable depth underground. The platforms are wide and finished with light-colored materials, with geometric patterns running along the walls and ceiling.
The station opened in 2017 as part of an extension of the Kalininsko-Solntsevskaya Line toward the western suburbs of Moscow. Before that, this part of the city had little direct access to the metro network.
The station sits close to Moscow State University, so the crowd is often made up of students and academics going about their day. This gives the area around the exits a particular rhythm that differs from most other metro stops in the city.
The station has both escalators and elevators, making it accessible for people using wheelchairs or strollers. Visiting outside of morning and evening rush hours makes moving through the platforms and exits noticeably easier.
The tunneling machine used to bore through this section of the line was named Svetlana and started work on May 31, 2013, several years before the station opened to passengers. In Moscow, these machines can take many months to advance just a few kilometers depending on the soil conditions below the city.
