Свято-Серафимовский монастырь, Orthodox monastery on Russky Island, Russia
The Svyato-Serafimovsky Monastery is a brick monastery on Russky Island, near Vladivostok, made up of a main church and several smaller buildings around it. It is a working religious community where services are held every day.
The building was first erected as a regimental church for the 34th East Siberian Rifle Regiment and consecrated to Saint Seraphim of Sarov in 1914. After the Soviet period, the site was restored and reopened as a working monastery.
The monastic community follows the Orthodox cycle of daily prayer, which shapes the rhythm of life on the island. Visitors who arrive during services can hear the chanting and observe the rituals up close.
Russky Island is connected to Vladivostok by a bridge, and buses from the city center go there directly. Arriving in the early morning lets you attend the morning liturgy, when the monastery is at its most active.
This is the only monastery on an island in the Russian Far East, a region where monastic life is very rare. The island setting creates a sense of separation from the mainland that shapes how the community lives and how visitors experience the place.
