Russian Institute for Strategic Studies, Russian state-controlled organisation
The Russian Institute for Strategic Studies is a research center in Moscow that focuses on international relations, security issues, and strategic analysis. It examines topics such as US-European relations, regional conflicts, and global security matters, while also addressing regional interests across Africa, the Arctic, and Eastern Europe.
Founded in 1992 by Boris Yeltsin, the institute was initially part of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service. In 2009 it was reorganized to report directly to the president, and since 2017 it has been housed in a restored former mansion on Smolensky Boulevard.
Located on Smolensky Boulevard in a quiet area surrounded by other government buildings, the institute is not open for public visits. However, reports and analyses produced here can be accessed online by those interested in learning about its research and perspectives.
The institute employs many retired intelligence officers and is sometimes referred to in foreign media as a 'retirement home for spies'. This staffing pattern reflects its close ties to Russia's security apparatus and strategic planning.
