Sadovnichesky Bridge, Concrete pedestrian arch bridge in Zamoskvorechye district, Moscow, Russia
Sadovnichesky Bridge is a concrete pedestrian crossing spanning the Vodootvodny Canal between Balchug island and the Zamoskvorechye district. The structure features a distinctive arched design that carries foot traffic above the waterway below.
The bridge was designed in 1963 by engineers Nina Bragina, V.A. Korchagin, and K.P. Savelyev as a dual-purpose structure. It was conceived to serve pedestrians while housing large water pipes within its construction.
The bridge structure reflects Moscow's engineering practices of the 1960s, incorporating prefabricated concrete panels despite economic considerations favoring in-situ concrete.
The bridge provides a wide, level walkway for pedestrians moving between the two banks. Its sturdy design makes it safe and reliable to cross in all weather conditions.
Workers nicknamed this bridge the Mastodon because of its massive arch construction. The unusually thick arches were necessary to accommodate the large water pipes running through their interior.
