Suzdalskie Lakes, Protected lakes in Saint Petersburg, Russia
Suzdalskie Lakes are a group of freshwater lakes in the northern part of Saint Petersburg, connected by natural waterways. There are three lakes of different sizes that together form one continuous water system.
The lakes were placed under protection during the 20th century as Saint Petersburg expanded northward and the surrounding land began to be built up. The protected status was meant to keep the water bodies from being lost to urban development.
Local residents use the shoreline for walking, jogging, and fishing throughout the year. These lakes serve as everyday meeting spots where people connect with nature near their homes.
The lakes are in the northern part of Saint Petersburg and can be reached by public transport, with several stops near the shoreline. Because there are multiple access points, it is worth approaching the area from more than one side to get a full sense of it.
The Starozhilovka River runs through all three lakes, linking them into one flowing system rather than a series of separate pools. This river also supports water birds and fish that have adapted to living within a city.
