Khlebozavod 5, Industrial heritage site in Presnensky District, Russia.
Khlebozavod 5 is a former large-scale bakery in Moscow's Presnensky District with distinctive red brick walls and industrial architecture from the early 20th century. The building displays features typical of mechanized food production from that era, with multiple floors designed specifically for different stages of bread manufacturing.
The bakery opened in 1931 and quickly became a symbol of Soviet industrial modernization in Moscow. It was even awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour for its importance to food supply, before production finally stopped in 2007.
During Soviet times, this factory represented a shift in how Moscow produced bread, moving from small bakeries to large industrial operations. Visitors can see today how the building was designed to impress with its scale and efficiency.
The site is located in central Presnensky and is relatively easy to reach, though visitors should know that access inside is limited since it is a closed building. The best way to appreciate it is to view the exterior to see the industrial architecture and scale of the complex.
The building was designed with special technical innovations to fully automate the bread-baking process, which was very advanced for its time. Today the structure still shows these early experiments in factory automation that few people know about.
